When you leave the dining room on Thanksgiving, there’s a good chance it’s a one-way path to the couch, a good chance you’ll turn on a football game, and it’s almost a guarantee you’ll see a commercial for daily fantasy sports.
In the past year, the daily fantasy giants DraftKings and FanDuel have made themselves impossible to ignore – and it’s a simple game. For one day, choose whichever players you want, decide how much to bet, then sit back and relax.
However, increased exposure brought more questions, like whether this is some form of sports gambling and therefore illegal. Several states have recently decided that it is – the latest resulting in a court case between the daily fantasy sites and the state of New York.
But many of the states fighting back have some stake in the gambling and gaming industry, much like the state of Maine.
ABC 7 and Fox 22 dove into the issue to find out whether Maine could be one of the next states to limit participation in daily fantasy sports.
