HERMON – The Hermon Hawks began their annual summer showcase in 2016, and the second edition takes place this weekend.
Several of the state’s best girls basketball teams converged in Hermon for the two-day event, from all the way down in Freeport and up to Houlton, the defending Class B North champions.
The tournament also drew a team from Vermont, as Cabot High School made the trip. MDI, Orono, Central, Ellsworth, Hampden, and Winslow rounded out the field of teams.
For the Black Raiders, it was the first taste of competition this offseason, and head coach Lindsey Withee said the talent at the Hermon Hawks Summer Shootout was a perfect way to knock off the rust.
“This is our first actual summer league game and our first scrimmage of the summer,” she said following a game against MDI. “It was nice. We had 16 kids here today and it’s a great atmosphere. It’s really nice to have competitive teams in this tournament as well. As long as we get one or two things out of it, that’s all I’m really looking for.”
