BANGOR – John Smith has already cemented his legacy as arguably the greatest running back to ever suit up for the Husson Eagles, so it’s easy to understand any accolade he is awarded before he even steps on to the field for his senior season.
Smith was named one of three senior captains for the Eagles football squad this upcoming year. He’s rushed for fifty touchdowns in his career, logging 1,822 yards last season en route to leading Husson to the Division III NCAA Tournament. The senior was not alone in receiving captain honors, though.
Tight end DJ Allen and defensive lineman Luke Washburn were also named captains for the 2017 season. Allen has four career scores, and has developed into a physical presence for the Eagles. Washburn, meanwhile, had a breakout year in his junior campaign. The Litchfield-native had 12 sacks in 11 games played.
The Eagles kick off their season Sept. 2 against Union.
