SYRACUSE, New York – Former Syracuse University and New England Patriots head football coach Dick MacPherson has died of natural causes. He was 86 years old.
MacPherson was born in Old Town, and quickly went on to become a national football powerhouse on the sidelines. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame, MacPherson would coach at UMass, before eventually headed to Syracuse and becoming a renowned figure with the Orange program. During his time in upstate New York, he would go 66-46-4, one of the winningest records in program history. The Orange made five bowl games during his tenure.
Additionally, he would coach the Patriots for two seasons.
MacPherson is a member of the Old Town High School Hall of Fame.
