ORONO – On the heels of back-to-back appearances in the America East women’s basketball championship game, the Maine Black Bears may have their work cut out for them. At least, that’s how the rest of the conference views it.
UMaine was picked to finish sixth in this year’s America East preseason coaches poll, tallying 31 total points. Last year’s No. 1 seed in the tournament, New Hampshire, was elected first with eight first place votes and 64 points overall. Albany, which Maine lost to the last two years in the title game, was picked to finish second.
Binghamton, Hartford and UMBC round out the top five. Vermont, Stony Brook and UMass Lowell follow behind UMaine.
The Black Bears lose experience coming into 2017-2018, with guard Sigi Koizar graduating and the transfer of several members of its core last season. Maine opens its season against Stonehill in an exhibition Oct. 28.
