BANGOR/AUGUSTA – It was a packed house at the Augusta Civic Center and Cross Insurance Center Saturday as cheer squads from all around the state competed in the MPA regional championships.
Lewiston had won six of the last seven Class A titles, but it was Bangor who shocked the Blue Devils swiping away the regional title Lewiston will look for redemption the state championship. Brewer also made the cut for states while Hampden just missed it.
The competition was wide open this year in Class C North. Sumner put forth a solid showing, good enough for third place and an invitation to states. Orono, Calais, Houlton and Central were the other teams to qualify. They all finished behind Mattanawcook though, the Lynx overcoming adversity to claim the Class C North regional title.
“My freshman year we had a team of like ten girls maybe and now that we’ve had such a big team we’ve overcome so much and we’ve gained so much throughout our program it’s just amazing to come out on top,” Lynx senior Mariah Smith said.
“My freshman year I was just an alternate I didn’t get the feeling until my junior year and after that I worked hard and it’s just amazing because this is what I’ve wanted for the past four year and here we are,” Lynx senior Hannah Bean said.
Central Aroostock came in having won nine of the past 10 Class D state championships, but the Panthers finished in second place to PVHS as the Howlers won their first regional title in 30 years.
“It felt so awesome, like its taken so long, like 30 years like that’s crazy we’ve worked so hard we have an amazing team and that’s why we did it,” senior Isaac St. Cyr said.
“We’ve been waiting since our freshman year to have this team all of the tumblers that came up we knew were going to add to it, we knew this was our year and we worked very hard for it,” senior Paige Thiboedeau said.
Hermon finished in first place in the Class B North regionals. Ellsworth, Old Town, MDI, Gardiner and Erskine also qualified for states.
The state championships will be held on Feb. 10 at the Cross Insurance Center.
