ORONO – Ed kohtala has coached at pretty much every level of basketball during his long career. His experiences at the high school, Division III and Division I level have all humbled him as he enters his next chapter at Orono.
Since resigning from his post as the Bangor boys basketball coach three years ago Kohtala never lost the itch to get back into coaching, it was just a matter of finding the right opportunity.
Once Jason Coleman stepped down at Orono to take a job on Richard Barron’s staff that door opened for Kohtala. After talking to long time friend and Hampden boys basketball head coach Russ Bartlett, the Red Riots job was a no-brainer.
“He had contacted me just to see where I was and what I was thinking about doing. He really got me thinking also. And with timing and the way things went Orono broke open and I just feel tremendously fortunate to have been the selection,” Kohtala said.
Kohtala is inheriting a young roster, one that exceeded expectations last year en route to a Class B quarterfinal appearance. The Red Riots ability to come together as a team under Coleman is something that he was impressed with.
“I’m also very excited about the nucleus of kids he left behind, the quality coaching they’ve had and the atmosphere that’s around the program. He’s been a resource he’ll continue to be a resource in fact i’m waiting on some video from him right now,” Kohtala added.
