ORONO – The Special Olympics Maine has become a staple over the course of the past half-century in Vacationland, and one of the most exciting parts of the year kicked off officially Friday.
The organization, celebrating its 49th year of existence, held its opening ceremonies at the University of Maine Friday evening. The actual summer competitions will then get going Saturday morning. The day saw the conclusion of the torch run, followed by a parade of athletes and the actual opening ceremony itself.
Several of those present had a chance to express their appreciation.
