HAMPDEN – Former Hampden Academy field hockey standout Claire Scobie does not hold back on her words to describe the University of Maine field hockey team.
“The program has just become amazing,” she said Tuesday.
Now, she will join the Black Bears in Orono, as she was one of six names UMaine announced as part of its freshman class ahead of next season. Scobie committed to Maine in 2016 before her junior year, and her thoughts about attending the school have not wavered.
“It’s surreal,” she said. “I’m excited to start feeling uncomfortable again. Sort of like, playing with older girls who are so great and having amazing stick skills and knowledge, and who are just in top shape.”
The challenge is part of the parth for Scobie, who embraces having to rise to play at a higher level.
“I’m a person who’s really about personal growth,” Scobie said. “So for me, I really feel challenged and I’m happiest when I’m being challenged and when I have structure. And that program has a lot of structure.”
