ORONO – Maine football sent shock waves around all of FCS football after beating rival UNH on Thursday. The win was impressive enough to get the Black Bears nationally ranked.
Maine enters the week as the No. 22 team in the FCS stats poll and the No. 25 team in the coaches poll. Maine led No. 7 New Hampshire from start to finish beating the Wildcats 35-7. It’s the first time the Black Bears have been ranked since 2014.
Also, The Colonial Athletic Conference announced that linebacker Sterling Sheffield has earned co-defensive player of the week.
Sheffield set the tone early in Maine’s win over UNH recording two sacks in the first quarter. Sheffield matched a career high with three tackles for loss in the teams win. As a unit Sheffield and the Black Bears limited the Wildcats to only 108 total yards on offense and -15 yards rushing.
