DEXTER – Hurricane Florence has devastated areas in and around North and South Carolina. Miles away the storm and the impact its had on its victims has been felt all the way up in Maine.
Dexter field hockey is stuffing LL Bean backpacks full of school supplies for kids down at Warsaw North Carolina school districts. Tigers head coach Brittany McAllister lived down in that area for six years, two of those years spent as a teacher at Warsaw Elementary School, an area devastated by flood waters.
Once she saw the damage on social media she knew she had to do something.
“I had a former co-worker of mine post on Facebook that she saw one of her students and her student was very upset because she lost her backpack to the flooding so I thought that would be a great thing we could do up here to help them,” McAllister said.
The support from the Dexter community has been tremendous as the team has gotten several non LL Bean backpack donations.
It’s been something McAllister’s players have taken seriously from Day 1.
“I thought it was cool that she thought of something like that like I would have never thought of anything like that. Like she thought of it and all the girls were really supportive of it,” Dexter midfielder Tory Asbury said.
“We have never experienced anything like that up here and I can’t even imagine what little kids over there having to live in gyms and stuff like that would have to go through,” Dexter sweep Autumn Irwin said.
