ORONO – Maine honored its seniors with a win over Elon, making them the CAA champions for the first time since 2013.
The game opened with both teams trading goal line touchdowns, before the special teams took over.
Earnest Edwards ran back two kickoffs over 93 yards in the second and third quarters, the first Black Bear to run back two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game.
Maine relied on its special teams and defense in this game, as they were without their starting quarterback Chris Ferguson for most of the game after he re-aggravated a previous shoulder injury.
The Phoenix would score thirteen straight points in the closing minutes of the third quarter into the fourth, and hold the ball in the final minutes of the game.
Sterling Sheffield hit Elon quarterback Daniel Thompson’s arm as he threw on their final offensive play to secure the win.
Edwards and Sheffield spoke after the game.
“I’m just speechless right now it’s an unbelievable feeling to be CAA champs after three years..first off I just want to say shoutout to my kick return game without them none of this is possible..I wish we could all get a touchdown from that but I’m just blessed,” said Edwards.
“Defense, offense, every guy on the team has been amazing..shoutout to the [defensive line],” said Sheffield.
