WATERVILLE, ME – Marc Zaharchuk (Richmond, ME) had 16 points and added 9 rebounds as Husson University pulled away in the second half for a 63-52 non-conference win over Colby College in men’s basketball Thursday night.
Zaharchuk was 5-for-9 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line for the Eagles, who were 14-for-15 from the free-throw line for the contest.
Donte Cottonham (Silver Spring, MD) added 13 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 assists for Husson. Aaron Willis (New York, NY) had 10 points, while Jon Klages (Freeport, ME) had eight points and three assists.
Ryan Jann (Westford, MA) and Chris Hudnut (Chevy Chase, MD) both had 9 points to lead Colby. Michael Longinoff (San Mateo, CA) added 8 points and 7 rebounds, while Luke Westman (Newton, MA) pulled down 9 boards and had 3 assists.
The Eagles never trailed in the game and took a quick 11-2 lead after 4:23 of play. Colby was able to get the lead down to five points on four occasions in the first half, but Husson led 30-23 at halftime.
The Mules got as close as three points early in the second half and trailed by five at 34-29 with 16:07 to play. The Eagles went on a 10-1 run over the next four-plus minutes to go up 44-30. Husson led by as much as 21 points when Zaharchuk scored inside for a 57-36 lead with 5:14 left. Colby went with a smaller line-up and was able to get the margin down to 59-50 with just 38 seconds remaining. The Eagles went 4-for-4 from the foul line in the final 31 seconds.
Husson improves to 11-5 overall on the season and will host conference opponent Maine Maritime Academy Friday night at 5:30 PM at Newman Gymnasium.
