It took a village to complete major renovations to Heddericg Field in 1996, but it’s going to take an even larger village to complete the next set of renovations.
“Many hands make for light work, and that’s sort of the approach here, we’re going to try to approach a lot of different people that have access and resources and interest in putting their name on something like this…,” said Brewer High School athletic director Dave Utterback.
Brewer High School announced their proposal on Tuesday morning to resurface the entire plot of land below Coffin Field in turf; allowing enough room for three multi purpose athletic fields, four youth baseball fields, or two high school baseball fields at once, a facility without comparison in northern Maine.
“We’re looking to give our kids, all the kids that play in outdoor activities the opportunity to play on world class facilities, first class facilities, softball program already has that, track and field program already has that, so we want to everything else to be on par with that,” said Utterback.
Utterback believes the facility could provide for potential revenue for the school, hosting youth tournaments,”very weekend I think we’d have some sort ability to have some sort of group in here, whether it’s soccer, baseball, softball, field hockey, lacrosse, you know football.”
At an estimate of four million dollars, sticker shock on the price tag is to be expected, but with the current state, Utterback believes it’s a necessary battle to get funding; “bake sales and car washes are not going to cut it, as thoughtful as those things can be, or go fund me pages, things like that, it’s really going to be opportunities to sit down in front of some people with access to some money…”
The school has given themselves around one year to raise the money, and plans to raise without tax payer dollars. If you are interested in donating to the proposed complex, contact Dave Utterback at [email protected]
