BANGOR – It’s hard to think about the good ol’ days during times like these.
Lynn and Mike Coutts don’t have to reminisce because, in a way, they’re reliving them.
“It’s been interesting I mean we had to get used to it again you know you’re used to taking care of yourself,” Lynn said.
“I think it’s the first time since I can remember that we’ve all been together for dinner every night for like the whole month of April, that hasn’t happened in like forever,” Mike said.
With home base in Orono, the family has been spread thin. Lynn, a former player, coach and athletic administrator at UMaine, now works at the University of Denver, Mike, coaches softball at UMaine, their daughter, Maggie, is a senior soccer and track athlete at Orono High School, and their son, Jackson, is a junior baseball player at the University of Rhode Island.
“Just to have everyone together, it’s comforting because being apart during this is kind of like I don’t want to say stressful but it was uneasy because you didn’t know if my mom was going to get stuck out there (Denver) and if she came back could we see her. It’s been good,” Jackson said.
The four are together, passing the time and working from home, while still moving forward despite losing the thing they all share a love of, sports.
“It (sports) is the pulse of what we do every single day and the joy of being with the kids being with your teams the competition,” Lynn said.
“It’s upsetting you do go to school for what 12 years and these are supposed to be the fun months I guess,” Maggie said.
COVID-19 has taught us to live in the moment, the fun months can still be, they just may be a little different. One thing’s for certain, the Coutts’ will be forging new memories, together.
“We’ve actually started running and that’s been interesting and fun,” Lynn said with a smile.
“Fun? I don’t know if it’s been fun interesting has been the case,” Mike replied with a sarcastic smirk.
“You got to pick up some new things that you know we’ve been cooking we’ve been taking turns cooking dinners I had the best one last night I think I’m winning so far with the dessert. So it’s been good it’s been really good,” Lynn said.
