ORONO – Monday evening the NCAA did what many anticipated it would do and grant an extra year of eligibility to spring sports athletes whos seasons were cut short due to COVID-19.
Which is huge news for Maine baseball. Head coach, Nick Derba, said barring them being taken in the MLB Draft later this year, top seniors, Trevor DeLaite and Hernen Sardinas will be back with the team next year.
“Those are two big guys those were two of our best players last year bringing them back into the fray is obviously a major plus we weren’t anticipating that to happen obviously in regular times but they’ll be able to come be leaders on a really good team,” Derba said.
DeLaite emerged as the Black Bears top bullpen arm last season as he led the team with a 2.12 ERA and 7 saves.
Sardinas led Maine with 11 home runs and 34 RBIs out of the lead-off spot in 2019.
Derba also added a few more seniors are weighing their options on whether to return to the program or explore other options.
