DURHAM, NC – Former UMaine women’s basketball coach Joanne P. McCallie announced Thursday that she is stepping away from her current position as Duke Women’s basketball head coach.
McCallie was in the final year of her contract with Duke after spending 13 seasons in the position. Her Blue Devils teams won three ACC tournament championships and made 10 NCAA tournament appearances during her tenure.
The longtime coach was investigated by the Duke human resources department after three players left the program during, and just after, the 2016 season, but ultimately maintained her position.
Maine was McCallie’s first head coaching job, coaching the Black Bears from 1992-2000. The ’98-’99 team won the program’s only NCAA tournament game.
Mcallie said Thursday in a state posted to social media that her decision is meant to give the Duke program a new start, “I want to provide an opportunity for change, growth and a sense of security relative to the future of the program.”
