HAMPDEN – Bailey Donovan will tell you that growing up as a black girl in Island Falls comes with a set of incredibly unique challenges, and Donovan says she had to grow in to that set of challenges.
Donovan says that growing up without black people outside of her family in her life made it difficult to embrace her identity as a black woman, especially with natural hair. Donovan says she would often resort to putting her hair in a bun until recent years, because of the misunderstandings about her hair styles, and what it means towards black heritage.
Education on the history of black culture is an important part of helping to create an understanding between races, according to Donovan. She says the more different cultures understand each other, the less negative experiences, like those she says she has been through on and off the court, will occur. “It’s just little side comments and things like that, it’s not okay but we’ve just brushed it off and let it be okay, so I think with education comes clarity on those things,” said Husson sophomore center Bailey Donovan.
