TURNER – Leavitt quarterback Wyatt Hathaway is the only Maine player on the list.
Each preseason, Sports Illustrated recognizes the top high school football players in the country with the watch list for its All-American team. One thousand players are on this list, and just one of them is from Maine.
Wyatt Hathaway, a standout at Leavitt Area High School was an integral part of the undefeated 2019 Class C state champions.
The rising senior rushed for other 800 yards last year season while completing around 65 percent of his passes, a stat that helped him earn a place on the watch list.
Hathaway tells us he is already having conversations with college programs across the Northeast, and he is hoping the interest grows heading in to his senior season.
The Sports Illustrated All-American watch list will get cut to 250 players in October, and cut again monthly until the team is announced in December.
Regardless of his selection of future lists, Hathaway says he’s honored to be recognized.
“It means a huge amount considering I’m the only kid from the state of Maine. Looking at that list, there’s a lot of kids going to high [Division I] schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Auburn, Oregon, anywhere you can think of, so even being on a list with those guys is a really big honor.”
