ORONO – Head coach Nick Charlton made his first public comment since Chris Ferguson announced his intent to transfer from UMaine on Monday.
Redshirt junior Chris Ferguson announced Monday that he submitted his name to the NCAA transfer portal, with the intent to use his final year of eligibility at another school through the graduate transfer rule after he graduates in December.
Ferguson was ruled out for the season in week six against Richmond, when he suffered as Lisfranc foot injury. True freshman Joe Fagnano started the remainder of the season, ushering in a spread option offense that better suits a mobile quarterback like Fagnano.
Speaking with Ferguson over the phone Monday night, he said he saw an opportunity to take his final year of eligibility elsewhere and Charlton said he was surprised to see the three year starter go.
“We had a good idea that something like that was going to happen, so we weren’t surprised, Chris wants to look at some other options and he’s in a position to do that because he graduated, we already had conversations prior to this so I wasn’t surprised and obviously I want the best for Chris and the program,” said Charlton.
