BANGOR – Andrew Fleming finished with 13 points, but missed the final shot of the game as time expired.
Maine opened the game on a 6-0 run, and maintained its lead for much of the first half. Vermont took a 2-point with less than 2 minutes remaining in the first half, and held it through halftime.
The Catamounts came out swinging in the second half, stretching their lead to ten points with thirteen minutes left to play. Maine methodically cut the deficit down throughout the remainder of the half. Fleming was fouled going to the basket with Maine down 57-55, and hit both free throws to tie the game. Vermont’s Ben Shungu charged to the basket in the final seconds of the game, but Fleming was charged with goaltending on the shot, giving them the lead 59-57.
Maine got the ball with 1.3 seconds remaining, and Fleming missed a three point shot as time expired. Fleming led the Black Bears with 13 points and 5 assists. Freshman Precious Okoh recorded 10 points and one rebound playing in place of the injured Sergio El Darwich.
