BANGOR – COVID-19 has forced almost everyone to get out of their comfort zone and try new things.
With the baseball season postponed the St. Paul Saints, an Independent League team, decided to hold virtual tryouts and former UMaine pitcher, Justin Courtney decided to give it a go.
“My girlfriend is from St. Paul, Minnesota, she played hockey at UMaine and he mom is still out in Minnesota and said to Mikayla (Rogers), ‘hey there’s a tryout going on with the St. Paul Saints you should send a video in,'” Courtney said.
The St. Paul Saints asked hopefuls to send in a highlight video as their tryout. The last four would take part in a vote on Twitter and Instagram with the winner earning a spring training roster spot.
Courtney made it to the final vote, which took place Monday night, but he fell to University of Portland alum, Connor White.
“You know just cool to get people talking about baseball anyways it seems like we’ve been away from sports for so long so it’s good to get people excited about something,” Courtney added.
