BANGOR – Former Maine baseball pitcher, Justin Courtney, lost a virtual tryout contest on social media for a spring training spot with the St. Paul Saints earlier this week.
But, Courtney isn’t giving up on his pro ambitions.
In fact he’s confident he would have made a pro roster before COVID-19 hit. In January, Courtney was invited to a showcase by a Red Sox scout and was also looked at by a Yankees scout.
He’s also spoken with several Independent League teams. Courtney had a tough senior season in 2019 after coming off Tommy John surgery. He says he feels like his old self.
“I kind of feel like I’m brand new again and I feel still like I have something to prove I still have some innings left in my arm so hopefully someone will give me that chance and I can just take the opportunity and run with it. I’m ready to pitch,” Courtney said.
