BELFAST – The Festival of Champions is exactly what it sounds like. The top runners from Maine and New England compete in one of the best cross country events you’ll see.
Falmouth High School junior, Sofie Matson, has dominated the competition as she won it her freshman and sophomore year. She did not disappoint Saturday.
They say third times the charm, but she needed no luck as Matson came in with a time 17:35.91, only a few seconds off the course record.
The Yachtsmen junior finished 14th at nationals in the 5K last year. Despite coming a few seconds short of her personal best, Matson was pleased with her performance.
“Every course is different in cross country so I mean the course I ran 17:29 on was a lot flatter than this so I of course take that into consideration but I was really excited with my time for this course given the hills and things like that,” Matson said.
“It’s a little definitely nerve racking with the expectations that I have and that other people have going into the race but at this point I’ve kind of just focused on running my own race and I’m doing what I think feels right,” she added.
