AUGUSTA – Hampden senior captains Alydia Brillant and Bryce Lausier were both recognized as the best players in the Class A North tournament.
No. 1 Hampden girls won their game versus No. 2 Gardiner, 43-37. Brillant led the Broncos with 15 points, sisters Amelia and Bella McLaughlin each accounted for nine points.Hampden was able to limit Gardiner’s Jaycie Stevens and Lizzy Gruber to a combined seven points. Hampden will face Marshwood in the Class A state championship February 29 in Portland.
The top-seeded Hampden boys went to the final minutes with No. 2 Cony, as the Broncos came out victorious, 52-50. The Rams led by as many as ten points, at two different points, in the second half. Cony had the final possession of the game, inbounding the ball with just over three seconds left in the game. Senior Dakota Dearborn took the final shot of the game, but his heave from half-court was just off. The Broncos return to the Class A state championship for the first time since 2017, facing York February 29 in Portland.
