BANGOR – No. 4 Calais girls basketball beat No. 5 PVHS 51-33 to advance to the Class C North semifinals.
The loss ended Howlers guard/forward, Lexi Ireland’s, career. Her leadership during last year’s regional championship run was a microcosm of what basketball means to the Howland community. As it has been so often, Tuesday night’s game against Calais was about much more than basketball.
PVHS honored Reed Ireland, Lexi and her sister Emilee’s brother who is battling cancer with special warm-up shirts. Between an ankle injury and her brother’s illness, Ireland wasn’t able to practice much with the team heading into the quarterfinal. But, her team, coach and community collectively picked her up.
“The town our team has always supported us we dedicated this game and our shirts to my brother who is right now in Boston battling cancer. Our shirts have they have Reed and a little cancer ribbon and on the back of every shirt has Ireland down the back because we worked for him today,” Lexi Ireland said after the game.
