STATEWIDE – This week opens the first time Maine residents over the age of 18 are now allowed to wager remotely on horse races.
As of Thursday, Mainers can bet on horse races taking place anywhere in the world, with bets placed online, over the phone, or on an app. Hollywood Racing, through the parent company of Hollywood Casino and Raceway in Bangor, is the lone operator in the state. The Hollywood Racing site, via Penn National Gaming, allows bettors to watch the races directly on the app or site.
This is the first time Maine residents have been allowed to wager virtually, even though the law legalizing it passed around 4 years ago. “Through different reasons it was held up in regulations, and things like that, so we’ve been following for about 4 years,” said Christopher McErlan, Vice President of Racing for Penn National Gaming.
