WATERVILLE – The first game of the year is usually filled with optimism and excitement.
At Coombs Field in Waterville, Bowdoin and Colby certainly came into Thursday evening’s game excited, but uncertainty overshadowed optimism. Mules catcher George Schmidt’s walk-off single in the ninth inning gave the Mules their first win of the season, on their first and final stretch of the season.
“It was honestly probably the coolest moment of my entire baseball career and it was great that I was able to share that moment with a bunch of guys that I’ve lived with for the past four years now and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better moment in my life honestly up to this point,” Schmidt said after the game.
The New England Small School Collegiate Athletic Conference (NESCAC) canceled its spring sports season due the the spread of the coronavirus. But, teams were allowed to wrap up their weekend games, Colby and Bowdoin doing so on the diamond and in girls lacrosse on Thursday where the Polar Bears won 15-10. Both teams will also play a softball double header on Saturday.
Bowdoin finished its season 4-2, while the Mules have one more series this Saturday at home against Brandeis.
