BANGOR – Former UMaine defensive lineman Charles Mitchell had a lot riding on the school’s scheduled Pro Day on March 27, as he hopes to play professionally next season.
For seniors not invited to the NFL Draft Combine, their schools’ pro day is their chance to get in the same room as NFL scouts. Players like UMaine defensive lineman Charles Mitchell had to act fast as schools began canceling pro days in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. “They texted the group chat saying we were going to have a virtual pro day like two days later, let’s gets this done and come with what you got because this is probably your last shot to get a pro day in,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell was set to take part in another team’s pro day in mid-March as the possibility of UMaine’s event being canceled became a possibility. The team at Test Football Academy in New Jersey jumped in to help the defensive lineman film a virtual pro day. “You’re going to get some film out there, you’re going to get some numbers out there for the scouts and the con is that there’s no guarantee they’ll look at the numbers,” said Mitchell.
Since filming that virtual pro day on March 13, gyms and training facilities in Mitchell’s home state of new jersey have all closed, leaving him to workout at home and connect with former teammate and fellow New Jersey native Taji Lowe at Mitchell’s high school field. You won’t find him bragging about his work online. “I’m always constantly getting in work, I see other guys on social media, posting their stuff and posting all their workouts, I’m not a social media guy, I just like getting the work and getting out,” said Mitchell.
Mitchell is still trying to get better, even outside of a proper workout. For him, that means finding time for core work in between games of Call of Duty: Warzone. “When I’m playing a game, in between loadouts I’m doing pushups and abs and stuff so I think I’m staying ahead a little bit,” said Mitchell.
You may not hear Mitchell’s name called before the NFL Draft ends on Saturday, but he will be waiting by the phone all weekend for a chance to prove himself; “prepared for the worst, praying for the best, but if those calls don’t come this week I still have that grind mode mentality.”
