BREWER – With everyone ramping up on paper goods and toiletries, the Brewer Department of Environmental Safety is worried about people flushing the wrong items down their toilets.
Officials advise you not to flush objects such as baby wipes, paper towels or any other sort of thick paper you could be using.
“With people buying all of these items, we are concerned that the sewer mains will be plugged with these items, as well as the lines going from homes out to the sewer mains,” said Lou Colburn, chief operator of the Brewer water control facility.
Colburn says people with septic tanks should be taking more precautions, because the cost of replacing or repairing the perforated pipes could be enormous.
Colburn also says the best way to avoid this is to know what to flush, and what not to.
