OGUNQUIT – A group in Ogunquit are doing their part to get rid of an invasive plant in the town.
The Marginal Way Committee took some time this weekend to harvest the seed pods from the black swallow-wart. They say the plant are spreading fast along the coast and are slowly making their way inland. They also say the plant can make a toxin that kills monarch butterflies.
To stop it from spreading. The group says it has to destroy the plants and the seeds.
Joan Griswold, Marginal Way Committee, says this is the 4th year that they’ve picked swallowhart seeds. She says people have come from as far as New Hampshire to help get rid of the plant.
