OAKLAND – New developments in the search for the person posting nude photos of underage Maine girls.
That person is now threatening to post more sexually explicit photos.
Police have gotten Facebook to take down at least eight of those sites but haven’t yet traced them back to anyone.
“I think it’s horrible. I think it’s horrific.” Katherine Jones, Messalonskee Graduate
The person responsible for posting sexually explicit photos of girls threatened to release 50 new pictures of teens along with their names.
“I can’t believe someone’s actually doing that to these young girls.” Katherine Jones is a graduate of Messalonskee High School, where we are told some students have been targeted. Kids from that school were the ones who told Oakland Police about the Facebook pages. But as soon as Facebook takes one page down, another takes its place.
Messalonskee Graduate Katherine Jones “For someone to post all these pictures, it’s a horrible thing. Because girls now.. Some girls have low self esteem. Well, now you just destroyed it. A lot of people are committing suicide because of these things.”
Former Messalonskee student “It made national news. So everyone knows about it and is talking about it.” This former Messalonskee student says after last fall’s tragic hay ride accident, this is the last thing they need.
Former Messalonskee student “Last year, of course, we had another tragedy. And it’s like we’re starting the year off again like this. And it’s just hard for the community, I think.”
The head of the Maine State Police Computer Crimes unit told us they’re putting a lot of resources toward finding whoever is doing this. Whoever is behind this posted today “I have the nudes of over 300 of you” and says “Friday mayhem will begin shortly.” So far, it hasn’t, after Facebook took at least two more of this person’s pages down.
“The social media is such a sneaky way to do a lot of awful things.” Mike Packard, Parent of Teenager “The kids are out there. And there are predators out there. And we got to find ways to catch them.”
Whoever is behind this has posted that the girls depicted in these photos gave their consent for these photos to be used on-line. However, that same person is also taking credit for outing these girls. Police believe the person is running scared. And even this person has posted, quote, “I’ll probably be in jail soon, to be honest.”
