WASHINGTON D.C – Senator Angus King was among those who handed a victory to President Obama by supporting his nuclear agreement with Iran.
The Maine Independent joined Democrats in blocking a Republican resolution to reject the deal.
That ensures the deal will take effect without a veto showdown.
Senator King says Iran is a known sponsor of terror and the only thing worse than a rogue nation of Iran is a rogue nation of Iran with nuclear capabilities.
He voted against the resolution because the deal will prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons for at least 15 years.
“They are a nuclear threshold state today. The risk to the world is imminent. It is not in 15 years, it’s today and that’s why this agreement is so important. Because basically it freezes and rolls back Iran’s nuclear capabilities for at least the next 15 years and probably longer.”
Senator Susan Collins is among those who voted against the nuclear agreement.
She says the deal is fundamentally flawed because Iran will still be capable of building a nuclear weapon at the expiration of the agreement.
