AUGUSTA – Governor Paul LePage and First Lady Ann LePage are lending their support to the Maine “Hire-a-Vet” campaign.
Right now there are between 6 and 8 thousand unemployed veterans in the state. A number the Governor says is not acceptable.
Governor LePage says he wants veterans to be able to come home and not only find a job, but find a career. He was joined by the first lady who said she thinks often times employers are nervous to hire veterans. She stressed that they are not victims – they are willing… Able… And eager to work.
One veteran from Brunswick says he thinks vets aren’t getting hired because of the stigma around PTSD.
“They may go fly off the handle, the have a flashback or something and that’s not true most of the veterans they’re getting counseling and they’re putting the war behind them, they don’t want to be associated with a war anymore. They’ve been through hell and they wanna forget it.” Chick Ciciotte; Air Force Veteran
The campaign officially kicked off on the 7th and goes for 100 days.
