CAPE ELIZABETH – A leatherback turtle is swimming freely tonight thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard.
A good samaritan called for help yesterday after discovering the turtle entangled in fishing gear. The Coast Guard responded and found the six foot turtle about 15 miles south of Cape Elizabeth.
Five crew members deployed in a small boat and quickly realized it wouldn’t be an easy rescue. The turtle was frightened and fought back as the guard members tried to get it under control to they could remove the fishing gear.
It swam toward the open sea once it was freed.
The leatherback is the largest of all living sea turtles and is also a protected endangered species.
