OLD TOWN – Tough news for folks in the Old Town area. Expera Specialty Solutions has confirmed it plans to close the local paper mill by the end of December.
A company spokesperson says the increased price for wood products, the decline in the Candian exchange rate and the abundance of pulp on the market has left the company with little choice. The company says it has a dedicated and talented team that worked hard to restart the mill. Those 195 workers are now bracing to be out of a job. The mill has had several owners over the years and all have been met with challenges. Expera acquired the property in December of 2014 and had hoped to make it a profitable business, but the industry climate has changed. The plan is to close the mill by the end of December. State labor officials have been contacted to help the employees who will be out of a job.
