SKOWHEGAN – Works from artist Bernard Langlais were recently donated by Colby College.
Langlais is the man behind the Skowhegan Indian statue that sits in the park the bares his name.
But it’s the new additions, like the falling woman. That has taken up residency in front of Aubuchon Hardware along the main stretch of downtown that have some people in the area upset.
“Some people think it’s a beautiful piece of art, others think it’s a little more bare than they would like to see. They’d like to see something more covered, you can understand that too, art is a very subjective thing, there are some people who look at classic pieces like David and wonder why isn’t he wearing a loin cloth, there’s always going to be that debate.” Corey King, Exec. Dir., Skowhegan Area Chamber of Commerce
King adds that while the reaction has been mixed, the statues are their to stay for the time being.
