BANGOR – When’s the last time you checked your smoke detectors? Well if it’s been more than 5 years, you are probably due for an upgrade.
The Bangor Fire Department and the Maine Red Cross are on a mission to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent in the next four years.
So Saturday, they took to the town to offer free fire detectors and installation.
“Our alarms are all up-to-date, they’re good for ten years. Once you lock that battery in, you won’t have to replace that battery either, so what we’re offering to people is really peace of mind for the next ten years.” Danielle Hardre, Disaster Program Manager, Red Cross
The volunteers also spoke to tenants about fire safety and how to properly maintain the detector. Aside from checking the batteries, they stress the importance of checking warranties on the detectors.
Similar events will be held around the state, including one in Brewer in two weeks.
