PORTLAND – The man who stole nearly $5 million-dollars from United Mid-Coast Charities while serving as its president will soon be heading to prison
82-year-old Rusty Brace is sentenced to four years in federal prison during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Portland this morning.
Over a period of 15 years Brace stole $4.6 million-dollars from UMCC – a nonprofit that provided financial help to the poorest people in the mid-coast area.
He pleaded guilty in May to mail fraud, tax fraud and making false statements to federal investigators. Prosectors say Brace diverted donations to the charity to his own accounts and used them to pay for personal expenses.
During the hearing the treasurer of the charity told the court that – quote – “Rusty Brace is the walking definition of a con man”.
Brace was allowed to return home following the sentencing hearing and was ordered to report to a federal prison on November 4th.
