BOOTHBAY HARBOR – Caught on video, a whale gets stuck off the coast of Maine, cameras were rolling showing the minke whale entangled in a lobster trap buoy.
“I started with my grandfather years ago.” Dan Williams, Boothbay Harbor. Dan Williams has been boating his whole life. “Just love the ocean just love being on the water.” But he’s never come back with a story like this. “It was a neat thing to happen.”
On Halloween he and his wife went out on the water – a great day for an end-of-the season ride. “That’s how it all started.” Williams heard a call come in on his radio from another boat just south of Burnt Island – asking the Coast Guard for help.”
“A boat had spotted a whale in a pot buoy” A minke whale entangled and exhausted. “I had one hauler on the side of my boat so I knew that I could probably do something.” Williams went to see what he could do.
“I saw the pot buoy and I saw you know his nose was kind of sticking out of the water and he was obviously worn out, he was really tired, I don’t know how long he had been there.” Slowly Williams started pulling the line in. “Then I thought about cutting the line, I said, no, I really want to make sure that i know that he’s free.”
So he kept pulling… “He kind of blew and then he kind of opened his mouth up and then we just kind of gave it a yank and it popped out and that’s when it happened” Finally free. “A happy ending.”
The whale swam away… Leaving Williams with a tale he’ll never forget. “You know, it was a great day, it was a great day.”
