GREENVILLE – A major announcement yesterday could effects hundreds of thousands of acres of timberland in the Moosehead Lake Region.
Weyhaeuser Co. Plans to purchase Plum Creek Timber Co., to become the largest timber, land and forest products company in the United States. Plum Creek owns 6.2 million acres of Timberlands in the U.S. Including 400,000 of those in the Moosehead Region. The company has targeted much of that land for development to include nearly one thousand homes and two resorts.
Those plans, however, have stalled and John Simko, Greenville Town Manager says he hopes this merger will propel those plans forward. “I do look forward to meeting with the new merged company leadership. I would hope they will come to the Moosehead Lake Region and talk to us about what this means to the plans that have been in motion, but I remain hopeful.”
We reached out to officials at Plum Creek but did not hear back from them.
