ORRINGTON – Local residents are teaming up with a national organization to help make the holidays merry for those around the world.
It’s called Operation Christmas Child. Locals have been collecting gifts for children throughout the year and putting them in shoe boxes. The gifts will ultimately be taken overseas to help brighten the holiday season for those in need.
“It has grown from the early days, in 1993 when they collected 11,000 boxes to the point today when they collect 10.4 million shoe boxes last year to distribute and they’re aiming for over 11 million shoe boxes this year.” offered Steve Heathcote of Operation Christmas Child of Central Maine.
Last year the Bangor area donated about 10-thousand shoe boxes to Operation Christmas Child.
If you would like to take part just drop off a shoe box filled with gifts to the Orrington Lighthouse Church. They will be collecting boxes starting this Monday.
