ORONO – It appears an endangered fish is making its way back to the Orono area.
Researchers at the University of Maine say three female shortnose sturgeon have been spotted between Veazie and Orono.
The fish was once an important food and trade source in Maine. But, the Penobscot River became uninhabitable to it over 100 years ago.
The Veazie Dam was removed in 2013 in hopes of bringing the shortnose sturgeon back to the area. So far actual spawning has not been observed.
