STATEWIDE – A relief for Maine scallop harvesters.
The Department of Marine Resources has decided to reopen key fishing grounds next week.
They include Gouldsboro Bay, Dyers Bay, the Machias rotational area along with Jonesport Reach. Those areas have been closed since December 31st to help preserve the fish stocks.
Officials say recent surveys have shown those areas can still withstand commercial harvesting this year. They’ll be using a new approach to monitor the shellfish to make sure there will be plenty around for years to come.
Scallops have increased in value in recent years—bringing in 5.75 million dollars last year.
