KENNEBUNK – A local woman has inspired the Marine Corps to change its uniform policy.
This after Kennebunk native Kate Pimental was not allowed to enlist because the female uniform did not cover the tattoo on her collarbone.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree says uniform standards are being changed, allowing women to wear crew neck undershirts. Male Marines are already allowed to wear the shirt under their uniforms.
Pingree calls this a common sense change. She doesn’t believe old regulations were intentionally discriminatory, but did discourage some females from enlisting.
Under these new guidelines Pimental’s tattoo will be covered, allowing her to serve.
