ELLSWORTH – Most of the fire damage was confined to the first floor. And that’s where the victim’s body was found by firefighters.
State Fire Marshall Office investigators are trying to determine what ignited Monday morning’s deadly fire.
A public safety department spokesman identified the deceased as Royce Saunders, a long-time Ellsworth resident. Saunders was well-known and well-liked by neighbors.
One neighbor, Dick Carlisle said, in his younger years, Saunders was an avid trapper and people would come from miles away to purchase gloves Saunders made from the furs he trapped.
Fire crews from four surrounding fire departments assisted the Ellsworth Fire Department battling the fire, a motorist reported flames shooting out of the house around ten thirty Monday morning. Firefighters had the fire under control within an hour of arriving at the scene.
Saunders lived alone in the Surry Road home.
The fire marshal said it could be quite some time before they’re able to determine the origin of this fire.
