AUGUSTA – Governor LePage and some fellow republicans want the state to pick up the tab for tuition for young people joining the Maine National Guard.
Sam Bolvin a 16-year-old student at Skowhegan High School wants to join the Maine Army National Guard. He also wants to go to college at the university of Maine at Orono but needs assistance.
Most New England states pay college tuition of students who join the guard but not Maine. Bolvin says Maine should do everything it can to try and keep young people in the state.
“I find it hard to believe that we’re one of the only states in our region, at least, that doesn’t offer this. And I think to be competitive and to keep those people here.” stated Bolvin.
Bolvin sayid if Maine won’t offer free tuition, he’ll have no choice but to join the National Guard in a neighboring state and go to college there instead.
