NEWPORT – This is an exciting time for emergency crews in Newport.
They’re busy moving into the new public safety building on Water Street. The fire department completed most of its move last week and the police department will be moving its gear this week.
Voters approved funding for the 3 million dollars facility last year after it became clear the old building was crumbling and simply wasn’t big enough.
“The building they were occupying a year ago was ready to be condemned, for all practical purposes. Course we had outgrown it many years ago. This building, we feel, should meet the communities needs for the next 75 years.” said Newport Town Manager Jim Ricker.
As part of the project, the public works department was also moved to a new building on the cemetery road.
The employees are now busy moving equipment and settling in, but they expect to hold a grand opening celebration sometime in the next month or so.
