BANGOR – No longer do Vietnam members have to serve on active duty for 180 days to receive an property tax exemption.
As of today, the homestead exemption increases in value. To qualify, you must be a permanent resident of Maine, a homeowner for at least 12 months prior to applying and must be a qualifying Veteran.
“On the homestead exemption for April 1st 2016 this year. The legislature changed the amount of the exemption that home owners are eligible to receive. It has previously been 10,000 dollars but now is 15 thousand.” said Phillip Drew, Bangor’s city assessor.
There is also a blind exemption, which is available for those that have a licensed doctor, by completing the paperwork, they will receive a 4,000 dollars.
