ELLSWORTH – After being in the works for years, outdoor lovers can enjoy the new extension of The Downeast Sunrise Trail in Ellsworth.
The trail begins in the heart of Downtown and ends at Washington Junction. This trail provides revenue opportunities for local businesses and tourism.
This gives an opportunity for families as well as tourists and businesses persons to enjoy the trail 24/7 four seasons,” said Stephen Rees, the president of Sunrise Trail Coalition, Inc..
Not only will this encourage tourists to visit local restaurants, businesses or lodging facilities, but it also helps the ATV and snowmobile industries. They bring over $500 million to the state.
“We live in a day and age where people generally live the way that they want to live and recreational opportunities are a big part of providing a quality of place that will attract workers and people a place to live,” said City Manager, David Cole.
There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony on December 2nd at the trail head. The trail is over 80 miles which extends to Machias. They hope to one day continue it to Calais and the Canadian border.
